On 18 July 2019 we celebrate the 10th anniversary of Mandela Day. Thousands of lives have already been changed through this special initiative, which encourages everyone to contribute and make change happen—however small. Although the day calls for 67 minutes of your time towards charity, the ultimate goal is to do something good for others every day.
What is the meaning of the 67 minutes for Mandela Day?
Nelson Mandela spent 67 years making the world a better place. One minute is counted for every year he served South Africa.
Why July 18?
This is Nelson Mandela’s birthday, making it a fitting date on which to remember his legacy.
How can you and your classroom contribute towards Nelson Mandela Day?
The 10 year anniversary video, Mandela Day: The Next Chapter explains the direction the Foundation is steering Mandela Day for the next 10 years.
Let's work with the Mandela Day Goals, as set out in the video:
Provision of quality education for all children.
Ask each learner to bring at least one book to school to donate, with a message of hope written on the inside cover. Start spreading good vibes!
Reduce hunger in families
Organize a food drive. Ask every learner to bring at least one non-perishable item to school. These can be distributed where there are needed in the community. Notes of encouragement could be delivered with the food.
Provide safe shelter for families to live and thrive in.
Ask learners to bring to school (with parents’ permission) household items that aren’t needed—e.g. clothing, blankets and towels. These can be donated to underprivileged families in the community.
Safe sanitation in every school.
Brainstorm ideas with your class. Toilet paper, tissues, bottled water, sanitary pads are all items that can make a difference to schools in need.
