You've had the call and secured your first relief teaching day—don't panic! Sit back, take a deep breath and read through these short tips to being a relief teaching superstar!
- Documentation: Make sure to bring copies of your anaphylaxis certificate, e-number form, e-emergency form, Tax file number, bank account details and Working with children check. Don't forget to sign-in at reception!
- If possible, arrive 30 minutes before the first bell and familiarise yourself with the classroom and any plans that have been left.
- Before you begin, define your behaviour management strategy. The kids can smell weakness; start the day off right by defining your expectations and sticking to them.
- Be confident and show no fear!
- Be prepared – have readers, lesson plans and ideas prepared just in case there is no work left. If there is a plan left by the classroom teacher you should follow that, but don't be afraid to mix it up if the plan allows.
- Leave feedback for the classroom teacher: details of how the day went, any behaviour issues or anything that needs to be followed up on.
- Tidy up - there is nothing worse than returning to a messy classroom. The teacher will thank you for it.
- And if all that fails ... fake it till you make it! Relief days will help you hone your teaching skills, you will learn and grow as a teacher with every opportunity.
