Is your school looking to adopt a whole-language approach to teaching reading?

Or, maybe you want to focus more on language proficiency and spelling in your reading programme?

Sounds in Focus employs a phonemic approach across the entire school (which is recognised as one of the most effective ways to teach spelling and reading skills) and aims to continually develop spelling skills, vocabulary, grammar concepts, and writing skills.

The programme provides all the resources and guidance that educators need to implement synthetic phonics in the classroom, resulting in learners reading fluently and with comprehension.

Take a look at what’s included:

Learner Books

The learner books contain 36 sound units designed to fit into the school year. Each sound unit is built on a three-step process to be taught within a single week, through a range of teaching strategies, activities, games, and discussions.

Teacher Guides

The teacher guides provides explanations of the teaching strategies, weekly overviews, ideas pages, suggested programme structure, testing and assessment approaches, home study tasks, and more.

Scrapbook

The Sounds in Focus Scrapbook complements the Exploring Sounds phase of the Infants Programme.

Learners complete pre-reading and pre-writing activities on the first side of each page on the day that they learn the corresponding sound. They then engage in an art activity on the reverse side of the page. These activities develop: fine motor skills, vocabulary, the ability to follow instructions, decision making skills, and satisfaction from pleasing outcomes.

The page is then detached from the book and taken home each day to show parents the sound for the day.

Foundation Toolbox

The Sounds in Focus Toolbox is essential for all Infant Class teachers and is a complementary component of the Sounds in Focus programme.

The toolbox contains:

  • Flash Cards – List Word, Special Word, and Grapheme cards.
  • Sound Cards (A4-size) – These cards show the 63 graphemes introduced in the Sounds in Focus programme and are ideal for developing segmenting and blending skills for reading and writing.
  • Sound Cards (A5-size) – These cards show the most common graphemes for the sounds of the English language. Great to use as a wall frieze at eye height for easy pupil reference.

Words and Sounds Book

My Book of Words and Sounds allows learners to record words both alphabetically and by sound, and includes frequently used words, the 43 sounds studied in the Sounds in Focus programme, and the most commonly used graphemes for each sound. There is also space for learners to record new graphemes and words they discover.

Learner Charts

There are two types of learner charts that can be used in the Sounds in Focus programme.

Learner Glance Cards are an everyday reference tool to help pupils decode and encode words. It includes all consonant and vowel sounds along with common graphemes and illustrated word examples. The Extended Glance Cards have additional graphemes.

Teaching Charts

The Teaching Charts are A1-sized wall charts, providing an easy reference to the sounds and graphemes presented in the Sounds in Focus programme. The extended charts contain additional words and graphemes that 4th–6th Class learners will encounter as they progress in the programme.
